Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has announced that Threads, a social media platform, is taking a significant step towards true fediverse integration by allowing users to follow fediverse accounts. However, this integration comes with some limitations, as fediverse posts won't appear in users' feeds, and accounts can only be followed if they've interacted with a post on Threads.
This development marks a crucial milestone in Threads' journey towards becoming fully interoperable with the fediverse, a decentralized network of social media platforms. While the integration is limited, it's a positive step forward, and Instagram head Adam Mosseri has confirmed that fediverse profiles and posts will appear on Threads, with users having the option to receive notifications when they publish new content.
According to Threads developer Peter Cottle, users can follow fediverse accounts when they see they've "liked, followed, or replied" to a federated Threads profile. Additionally, Cottle announced that web and Android users (with iOS support coming soon) will be able to linkify Fediverse usernames in posts, making it easier to discover and follow fediverse accounts. However, users' accounts must be federated, and the fediverse account must be "eligible to be followed."
Cottle demonstrated the new feature by tagging Star Trek actor and activist George Takei's Mastodon account, showcasing the potential for seamless interactions between different social media platforms. Meta's Seine Kim emphasized the company's goal of growing the fediverse responsibly, prioritizing a safe, diverse, content-rich, and interoperable community.
Notably, this development comes at a time when Bluesky, another social media platform, has been gaining attention. It's possible that the increased competition has prompted Threads to accelerate its feature development, with new features being rolled out at a faster pace in recent weeks.
While this limited integration is a step in the right direction, it's clear that there's still much work to be done to achieve true fediverse integration. Nevertheless, this move demonstrates Meta's commitment to creating a more open and interconnected social media ecosystem. As the company continues to work towards its goal, users can expect to see more features and improvements in the coming months.
The implications of this development are far-reaching, with potential benefits for users, content creators, and the social media landscape as a whole. As Threads and other platforms continue to push the boundaries of fediverse integration, we can expect to see new opportunities for collaboration, innovation, and growth.
