Spotify has unveiled its Wrapped 2024 feature, which includes a groundbreaking AI-generated podcast that summarizes users' listening habits, as well as a new music evolution tracking feature. This year's Wrapped is the result of a partnership between Spotify and Google, leveraging the tech giant's AI note-taking technology, NotebookLM.
The AI-generated podcast, available to both free and Premium users in seven countries, including the US, UK, Australia, and Canada, uses two AI "hosts" to discuss users' top songs, artists, and genres of the year. This innovative feature marks a significant step forward in personalized audio experiences and demonstrates Spotify's commitment to staying at the forefront of audio innovation.
In addition to the AI podcast, Wrapped 2024 introduces a music evolution tracking feature, which assigns users up to three musical phrases for each month, such as "heatwave," "beach," and "reggaeton." This feature provides a unique insight into how users' tastes change throughout the year and generates a personalized "music evolution" playlist containing favorite songs and new music tailored to their preferences.
Other notable updates to Wrapped 2024 include the ability to see the longest listening streak for top five artists, an updated "share" button that indicates whether shared audio is in the user's top 100 songs, top 20 artists, or top five podcasts, and the return of Spotify's AI DJ, which allows Premium subscribers to create playlists based on the year's data with prompts like "Make me a playlist of songs that represent my music journey over the year."
Despite being one of the last major music streaming services to release its annual recap, Spotify's Wrapped 2024 is likely to generate significant buzz, thanks to its innovative AI-powered features. Apple Music, YouTube Music, and Amazon Music all released their personalized recaps earlier this year, but Spotify's unique approach is expected to dominate the conversation.
According to Molly Holder, Spotify's senior director of product for personalization, the partnership with Google was a natural fit, given the companies' shared passion for audio and podcasts. "At Spotify, of course, we love audio, we love podcasts, and we're always looking to be where our users are listening," Holder said during a press briefing.
The most-streamed artists globally in 2024 were Taylor Swift, The Weeknd, Bad Bunny, Drake, and Billie Eilish, while the most-streamed song was "Espresso" by Sabrina Carpenter. The most-streamed album was Taylor Swift's "The Tortured Poets Department: The Anthology," and the top podcast globally was "The Joe Rogan Experience."
With Wrapped 2024, Spotify continues to push the boundaries of personalized audio experiences, leveraging AI and machine learning to create unique features that set it apart from competitors. As the music streaming landscape continues to evolve, Spotify's innovative approach is likely to remain a key differentiator.
