Scout Motors, a Volkswagen Group spinoff, has unveiled two electric vehicles (EVs) that blend modern technology with rugged styling, aiming to appeal to American customers. The Scout Traveler SUV and Scout Terra truck will feature a body-on-frame chassis, solid rear axle, and front and rear mechanical lockers, delivering 1,000 pound-feet of torque and 0-60 mph acceleration in 3.5 seconds.
What sets these EVs apart is the option for a built-in gas-powered generator, called Harvester, which will provide extended range variants with over 500 miles of range. This move is seen as a hedge against range anxiety and infrastructure uncertainty. The fully electric models are expected to offer up to 350 miles of range and will be equipped with Tesla's North American Charging Standard.
Scout Motors CEO Scott Keogh emphasized the importance of offering a "proper EV experience" with the Harvester model, which will still feature a frunk, battery-driven axles, and engine-powered battery charging. The company is targeting a 2027 launch, with prices starting under $60,000 and potentially as low as $50,000 with available incentives.
The Scout EVs will also feature a modern zonal architecture, enabling over-the-air software updates and remote diagnostics. The interior design combines digital elements with nostalgic touches, such as a central touchscreen, toggles, and knobs. The company will sell its EVs directly to consumers, bypassing VW dealerships, and has already begun taking reservations with a refundable $100 deposit.
