Meta Suspends Celebrity Jet-Tracking Accounts, Citing Privacy Concerns

In a move that has sparked controversy, Meta has suspended several Instagram and Threads accounts that tracked the private jets of high-profile individuals, including Mark Zuckerberg, Elon Musk, Kim Kardashian, and Bill Gates. The accounts, run by Florida college student Jack Sweeney, were taken down on Monday, with Meta citing a "risk of physical harm" to the individuals as the reason for the suspension.

The suspended accounts had been providing real-time updates on the flight movements of celebrities and public figures, including former President Donald Trump and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis. Sweeney's account tracking Taylor Swift's jet was disabled on Friday, and the owner drew parallels to Elon Musk's @ElonJet account, which was permanently suspended from Twitter in 2022.

The move comes amidst growing concerns over privacy and security, particularly in the wake of a new bill signed by U.S. President Joe Biden in May, allowing private aircraft owners to anonymize their registration information. However, Sweeney claims that tracking high-profile individuals is still possible through tips from other flight-tracking enthusiasts.

The suspension has sparked debate over the balance between privacy and public interest, with some arguing that the accounts provided a unique window into the lives of the elite, while others see it as an invasion of privacy.
