In a groundbreaking development, Bay Area-based startup MDC has unveiled a revolutionary robotic system designed for minimally invasive surgery, compatible with Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) machines. This innovation promises to transform the field of surgery, enabling surgeons to perform procedures with unprecedented precision and efficiency.
Currently, surgeons rely on a time-consuming and inefficient process, involving repeated imaging and manual needle advancement. MDC's solution tackles this challenge by creating a robotic system that can operate inside an MRI machine, without interfering with its operations. This feat is achieved through the use of "high stiffness, low friction hydraulic transmissions and actuators" powered by water, allowing for precise control and dexterity.
The system, developed by founder and CEO Sam Frishman, is initially targeting biopsies and ablations, but has the potential to enable new capabilities beyond what is currently possible. With $1.2 million in pre-seed funding and a recent graduation from SOSV's HAX accelerator, MDC is poised to make a significant impact in the healthtech industry.
MDC's presentation at the TechCrunch Disrupt 2024 Startup Battlefield stage marks a significant milestone in the company's journey, as it looks to revolutionize the field of minimally invasive surgery.
