Google Workers Urge DOJ to Protect Them in Antitrust Remedies

Google employees are taking a stand in the ongoing antitrust battle, urging the Department of Justice (DOJ) to consider their rights and protections in any breakup remedies. Members of the Alphabet Workers Union (AWU) met virtually with the DOJ Antitrust Division last month to share their perspectives on the potential impact of antitrust remedies on workers.

The AWU is advocating for worker protections and empowerment to speak out, citing concerns that any remedies imposed by the court could lead to job changes or losses. The union has filed an unfair labor practices charge with the National Labor Relations Board, alleging that Google has discouraged workers from raising concerns about the company's future.

The DOJ is expected to file a refined remedy proposal on Wednesday, which could include spinning out Google's Chrome browser and Android operating system, or prohibiting certain contract terms and requiring licensing of its data. The AWU is pushing for workers' voices to be part of the conversation, recognizing that remedies will fail if workers remain scared of retaliation and are unable to voice concerns.
