Google Pours $1.5M into Nigerian AI Talent Development

Google has announced plans to support and accelerate AI talent development across Nigeria with over $1.5 million (N2.8 billion) in funding. The grant is part of Google.org's $5.8 million commitment to digital skills programs in Sub-Saharan Africa.

The support from Google will help Data Science Nigeria and the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation & Digital Economy in AI talent development, bolstering the ongoing AI-driven initiatives to upskill youth and under- and unemployed Nigerians. The funding will also benefit 10 selected startups, each receiving ₦100 million in funding, along with up to $3.5 million in Google Cloud Credits, access to Google's AI tools, and mentorship from Google's AI experts.

The move is a significant step towards advancing the AI ecosystem in Nigeria, with the Minister of Communications, Innovation & Digital Economy, Dr. 'Bosun Tijani, emphasizing the importance of this support in driving Nigeria's digital transformation. Google's commitment to Africa's innovation ecosystem is also reinforced, with the company's President for Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, Matt Brittin, highlighting the potential of African entrepreneurs to harness AI to address large-scale societal challenges.
