General Motors has announced that it has become the second-largest seller of electric vehicles (EVs) in the US, with sales of 32,000 units in the third quarter of 2024. This milestone marks a significant achievement for the automaker, which has been investing heavily in its electric vehicle platform.
GM's EV sales have accelerated since the company built a dedicated EV platform and began producing battery cells through its joint ventures with LG and Samsung SDI. The company has sold a total of 370,000 EVs in North America since 2016, with 300,000 of those units sold in the US. While Tesla remains the undisputed leader in EV sales, GM's progress is a notable development in the electric vehicle market.
Ford, which had a strong early start in the EV market, disputes GM's claim to the second spot, arguing that GM is aggregating sales across multiple brands. However, GM's sales figures are still an impressive achievement, and the company expects to start turning a profit on EVs by the end of the year. As the EV market continues to grow, manufacturers are adjusting their rollout plans to meet changing consumer demand.
