General Motors CEO Mary Barra took the stage at TechCrunch Disrupt on Tuesday, sharing her vision for the company's electric vehicle (EV) future, autonomous driving ambitions, and cybersecurity priorities.
Barra emphasized the importance of affordability and accessibility in driving EV adoption, citing the need for vehicles with a range of at least 300 miles to alleviate range anxiety. She highlighted GM's efforts to lower battery costs and expand charging infrastructure, including a partnership with EVgo.
The CEO also reiterated her commitment to autonomous vehicles, despite a recent setback with Cruise, GM's self-driving car subsidiary. Barra believes that autonomy will ultimately drive safety improvements and enable personal autonomous vehicles.
On the topic of cybersecurity, Barra stressed the importance of protecting sensitive data collected by EVs, which are essentially "computers on wheels." She acknowledged GM's past data-sharing practices with insurance companies but noted that the company has since stopped sharing that data and appointed an executive to oversee customer privacy.
In a significant shift, Barra also indicated that GM is reevaluating its business strategy in China, where the company is struggling to compete with government-backed domestic brands. She described the current market situation as "not sustainable" and hinted at a potential pivot in GM's approach to the Chinese market.
Overall, Barra's comments underscore GM's ongoing efforts to navigate the complex landscape of electric and autonomous vehicles, while prioritizing cybersecurity and adapting to changing market conditions.
