The fediverse, a decentralized social network, is getting its own TikTok competitor with the launch of Loops, an open-source video sharing app. Loops, developed by Daniel Supernault, the creator of federated Instagram rival Pixelfed, promises to offer users a platform that prioritizes their data privacy and ownership.
Unlike traditional social media platforms, Loops claims it will not sell or provide user data to third-party advertisers, use user content to train AI models, or gain rights to uploaded content. Instead, users retain full ownership of their contributions, granting Loops permission to use their content.
Loops is still in its early stages, but it's expected to integrate with ActivityPub, the protocol that powers Mastodon, Pixelfed, and other federated apps, allowing users to follow and interact with content from other platforms. The app will also allow users to follow other users, like, comment on, or share their videos, with remote users from other platforms able to follow Loops accounts and engage with content.
The app is currently accepting signups, with users to be notified when they can start using the platform. Loops will rely on user donations via Patreon, Open Collective, and Liberapay, and is finalizing a grant to sustain its development for a year.
As the fediverse continues to grow, with over 11.6 million users and 1 million monthly active users, Loops' entry into the space marks a significant shift towards decentralized, open-source social media platforms that prioritize user privacy and ownership.
