Disney Plus is taking a significant step towards becoming a one-stop entertainment hub by integrating ESPN Plus content into its app, starting today. The move marks a major expansion of the streaming service, which previously added Hulu content earlier this year. The ESPN tile on the Disney Plus homescreen will initially offer live games and shows from ESPN Plus, but the company has announced plans to launch a full ESPN streaming service in 2025.
The addition of ESPN Plus content is part of Disney's strategy to promote its triple-package bundle, which includes Disney Plus, Hulu, and ESPN Plus. To incentivize subscribers to upgrade to the bundle, Disney is offering a curated selection of live sports events and shows from ESPN Plus, as well as movies and series from Hulu, to Disney Plus subscribers. The tiles for both services will now appear in the main navigation, even for users who don't currently subscribe to Hulu or ESPN.
According to Alisa Bowen, president of Disney Plus, the integration aims to provide bundle subscribers with a single platform to access content from all Disney brands. ESPN Plus offers an impressive 30,000 live sports events annually, along with original content, making it a significant addition to the Disney Plus ecosystem.
However, the real prize for Disney is the upcoming launch of a full ESPN streaming service, expected to debut in the fall of 2025. This service will offer a more comprehensive sports experience, including integrated betting and fantasy leagues, and is rumored to cost around $30 per month. While users will be able to access the service through Disney Plus, the ESPN app will provide a more feature-rich experience.
Disney's focus on bundles and ad-supported plans is a key aspect of its strategy to make its streaming business profitable. The integration of ESPN content will provide advertisers with more targeted inventory options, including the ability to purchase ads by sport, league, team, and within live events.
In addition to expanding its content offerings, Disney has also taken steps to address password sharing, introducing a fee of $6.99 to $9.99 for customers who allow others to sign into their Disney Plus account from a different location. As the company continues to add more content and features, it's likely that the cost of subscribing to Disney Plus will increase, with Disney citing the app's value as an all-encompassing entertainment hub as justification for these hikes.
The evolution of Disney Plus into a comprehensive entertainment platform raises questions about the future of streaming services. As the industry continues to shift towards bundled offerings and ad-supported models, users may find themselves facing a reality reminiscent of traditional cable TV, but with the added convenience of streaming.
