Apple is reportedly working on a major AI overhaul of Siri, dubbed "LLM Siri", to make the digital assistant more conversational and natural-sounding, similar to OpenAI's ChatGPT and Google's Gemini Live. According to a Bloomberg report, the new system will be powered by Apple's AI models and will enable users to have more advanced interactions with Siri.
The revamped Siri will have an expanded ability to use App Intents to interact with third-party apps, as well as utilize Apple Intelligence to summarize and write text. While Apple may announce its plans as early as next year, the company intends to replace Siri's underlying software with the new system in the spring of 2026.
Apple's senior vice president of software, Craig Federighi, hinted at the differences between Siri and ChatGPT, highlighting Siri's ability to perform tasks locally on devices, such as opening garages and sending text messages. The development of LLM Siri marks a significant step in Apple's AI rollout, which has been slow so far, with the company only recently adding a ChatGPT integration into Siri as part of the iOS 18.2 beta.
