In a dramatic turn of events, the Kenyan High Court has adjourned a hearing on a suit filed by the Kenyan Human Rights Commission (KHRC) and the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) challenging the concession of Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) to Adani Group. The concession agreement, worth $1.85 billion, has been shrouded in secrecy, sparking widespread public outcry and opposition.
The deal, which includes the construction of a new terminal and taxiways at JKIA, has been criticized for its lack of transparency and potential risks to Kenyan taxpayers. The KHRC and LSK argue that the agreement is "irrational" and does not follow Kenyan laws, including the Public-Private Partnerships Act of 2021.
The adjournment comes after a virtual hearing was disrupted by protesters chanting "Adani must go." The case will now be heard in open court on October 22. This development is significant for the tech and startup community, as it highlights the importance of transparency and accountability in public-private partnerships.
